The Progressive Piano Suite

Yes you can...

Yes you can learn piano and keyboard – it’s easier than you think! It’s also a lot of fun, especially with a positive and patient tutor that loves teaching music. My name is Matthew Childs. I have 26 years of piano experience, 10 years of musical theatre experience and am a two-time recipient of the Young Composer of the Year award in conjunction with the NZSO. I have achieved Grade 8 Pianoforte and am currently in my final year of my Bachelor of Music (Bmus) study. I would love to share my passion for music with you regardless of where you are at in your musical journey. I teach from home, saving you money and providing you with a relaxed and comfortable environment to thrive in.

I teach from 5 years to 105. You don’t need to be musically gifted to make significant progress in piano – after all, it is the journey, not the destination that matters.

What you can learn

I offer modern and classical streams of tuition, from beginner through to Grade 8. This includes keyboard skills – both traditional piano and electronic keyboard. I also teach you to read and play sheet music. Looking for something a little more advanced? Other tuition includes compositional technique, and music theory. I can provide a structured pathway to piano proficiency or can provide more customised lessons to suit your particular musical journey and needs.

Regardless of where you start, our journey will be fun, rewarding and at a pace that you are comfortable with. I also send video tutorials for students that like an audio-visual option.

Parents I can give your child a joy and interest in music that will allow them to grow quickly into accomplished musicians – especially with support from home..

Pricing guide

I charge per lesson – in either half-hour or full hour blocks. $50 for the hour, $30 for half. Fees need to be paid prior to the lesson (this allows me to keep my administration costs down and pass on those savings). You can pay in cash or by bank payment. I do not accept credit card payments unfortunately.
I do travel to students within a reasonable distance. There is a fee for travel so talk to me about what suits you best.

You only need yourself to make a start

I offer a free, no obligation assessment for new pupils. This assessment allows me to get a feel for your level of knowledge and skill. For beginners in their first few lessons, I will supply all the initial material needed. Once I have an idea of your skills and your desired musical direction, you may need to purchase music books and sheet music. For convenience, most books can be ordered through me – I offer a 10% discount through my suppliers.

Once your journey is underway, I recommend that you purchase 1M5 or 14M5 music staff paper, some pencils and an eraser. A refillable clear-file is also ideal for collating miscellaneous teaching material that I give you. I have access to online sheet music and will send files directly to students print out. I also send video tutorials for students that like an audio-visual option.
